Program
This is a program by the Canadian Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL) Association to offer Canadian college and university students an affordable and quality study opportunity in Taiwan. Members of the Canadian TCSL Association are Chinese language & literature instructors from across Canada. The 2027 program is a 3-week (22 days) Chinese language and culture immersion program in Taipei. Bursaries are provided by the Taiwan's Ministry of Education to student groups of 15 or more.

Who can apply?
Canadian local and foreign students studying Chinese as a foreign language or as a heritage language at a college or a university.
This program is not for native Chinese speakers (Mandarin or other Chinese dialects).

Program Fee
Students pay full program fee of CAD2980 to register. The Taiwan Ministry of Education will provide bursaries to a group of 15 or more students. Each student will receive a bursary of NT$18,000 (app. CAD$800, subject to exchange rates) while in Taipei. The organizer Canadian TCSL Association will provide each student with a bursary of CAD200.00 each. Note that if the group is smaller than 15 participants, there will be no bursary.

FAQ
1. Can I get university/college credits for this program?
A certificate will be issued after the program. You can apply for transfer credits from your college/university. Check with your institution to learn about transfer credit application rules and procedures.
2. Is a deposit required for application?
Yes, a non-refundable application fee of $500.00 is required. Register early to be considered. If we cannot offer you a spot in this year’s program, the application fee of $500.00 will be fully refunded.
3. Can I withdraw after I have registered? Will I get any refund?
Yes, you can. See cancellation refund dates and refund amounts below.

4. Do we all have to go and return together as a group on the same flights?
We would recommend a departing flight and a returning flight (Vancouver-Taipei). Soochow University will provide airport transfers for these flight. You can take another flight and meet up with the group at the airport on the date and time specified. If you cannot meet up with the group on the arrival date, you can take a taxi to go to the hotel. Public transit from the airport to the city center is also very convenient and inexpensive.
5. Can I stay longer in Taiwan after the program ends?
Yes, you can make your own arrangements to stay longer in Taiwan. Make sure your travel medical insurance covers your extended stay.
6. What will I learn/experience in the program?
- Chinese Language: Communicative Chinese classes in an immersive environment.
- Cultural workshops & activities in the afternoons.
- Real life language & cultural experiences.
- Free evenings and weekends to explore the city.
7. Can I go on the program but not attend classes or lecturers?
If you are not participating, you do not qualify for the program. Except for illness and other extenuating circumstances, 100% attendance is required for participating in the program and for the bursary.

Canadian passports holders can stay in Taiwan for 90 days without a visa.

10. How much money do I need for my 3-week stay?
You need money for meals, shopping and your own planned activities. The amount would depend on your own plans and budget. Simple meals are about CAD$10-15. Dining/eating options near school and hotel - simple breakfast CAD $5-8; lunch or dinner CAD$ 8-15. Meals around City center area are about CAD $10-20.
11. In Taiwan, do I pay with credit cards or cash?
You can pay with either cash or credit cards. Check with your bank to see service charges when using your credit cards overseas.
12. How do I get cash in Taiwan?
ATM machines are readily available in banks and convenience stores. You can get cash with your bank card. Check with your bank to learn about fees and maximum daily withdrawal amount.
13. How do I use my cell phone in Taiwan? Do I need to purchase a phone plan?

14. What is the electric voltage in Taiwan?
The standard voltage in Taiwan is 110V, similar voltage level used in Canada.
15. What plug adaptors do I need in Taiwan?
Types A & B. Type A is the plug with two flag parallel pins.
Type B is the plug with two parallel pins and a grounding pin.
