2010 Summer Language Program in Shanghai

Program Overview

This is a program by the Canadian TCSL Association to offer an affordable and quality study opportunity to Canadian college and university students. Members of the Canadian TCSL Association are college and university Chinese language teachers from across Canada. The 2010 program is a 4-week language study program in Shanghai, China’s biggest city and home of the 2010 World Expo. Visit the 2010 Expo, historical sites such as the Bund, Yu Garden, and the new commercial and industrial Pudong area.

Program Highlights:

A minimum of 50 hours of language instruction

3 hours of language classes in the mornings, Mondays-Fridays

Chinese university students as study partners

afternoon cultural & social activities

some free afternoons to explore the city

*Program fee based on exchange rate in November, 2009. Additional charges may be required if exchange rate goes up.
** You can purchase your own plane ticket; or we can purchase a group ticket for you. Price of the group ticket will depend on the number of tickets requested. It would be around CND$1,000-1,200.00.
*** Participants are REQUIRED to purchase travel & medical insurances.
**** Approximate meal costs (lunch & dinner) per day: CND$6-10.

FAQ

APPLICATION

1. Is there any competition to go on the program? Do I have to know Chinese to participate in the program?

Participation is on a first-come first-served basis.While there is no requirement of Chinese language skills, participants with some prior knowledge would benefit more from the experience. If you sign up for the program, it would be advisable to take some language classes before you go.

2. When will I know if I am accepted?

Within a week of receiving your application, we will contact you by email or by phone to let you know. You can also enquire by email.

TRAVEL

3. Will participants meet before the trip?

There will be an information meeting in Vancouver before the trip.

4. Can I travel ahead of time?

Yes, you just have to meet up with the group either at the Shanghai Pudong Airport or at our hosting institute.

HOUSING

5. Where do I stay?

You will be sharing a room (double room) at a nearby 3-star hotel. Rooms are equipped with air-conditioner, telephone, wireless internet connection, color TV and hot shower. Food, drinks, laundry and long distance calls are NOT included. There is also easy access to the Internet on campus.

MEALS

6. Meals are not included in the program fee. How much do meals cost?

Breakfasts are included. Lunch costs about CND2.00 on campus and dinner about CND5.00; a total of about CND7-10 a day.

LANGUAGE CLASSES

7. How do I know which class to take?

Participants will be divided into different classes according to their level of competency. There will be a placement on the first day of classes.

8. How long are the classes?

There are two classes each morning. Every class is about 80 minutes long with a 10-15 minute break between classes.

9. Can I get credits from my university for this study program?

Students of past programs were successful in transferring credits they obtained from the hosting institute to their Canadian universities and colleges.
You will be provided with a transcript and a course description with which you can apply for transfer credits from your university/colleges. Some universities/colleges require prior approval for taking courses overseas. Check with your university/colleges to see what is required. It is also a good idea to obtain a course outline of a similar language course from your university so that the hosting institute knows what information to provide on the transcript.

GENERAL

10. What is the weather like in Shanghai in May and June?

Cool to warm in May and becoming humid and hot in June. Most places are air-conditioned.

11. What clothes should I bring?

Summer clothes and a cap/hat. Do also bring a pair of long pants, a long sleeve top/shirt and a wind breaker for outdoor trips. It would also be good to have an outer layer in rooms with strong air-conditioning.

12. What is the exchange rate from Rmb to foreign currency?

The Chinese currency is RMB (Renminbi).

13. What money should I bring to China?

You can buy travellers’ cheques which can be exchanged into RMB at a bank in Shanghai. You can also bring cash to be exchanged at Shanghai banks.

14. What's the voltage/power supply?

220volts, 2pin.
