Course Descriptions |
150.176 Introductory Chinese: An introduction of vernacular (Mandarin) Chinese in spoken and written form. Grounding in pronunciation, basic grammar, vocabulary and written characters. This is a course for students who have no previous knowledge of Chinese. 150.276 Intermediate Chinese: Continuation of introduction of basic vocabulary, grammatical structure and written characters. Emphasis will be given to the development of aural/oral skills. 150.236 Mandarin Comprehension: For students who have reading and writing of a Chinese dialect other than standard Mandarin. Students will learn the fundamentals of Mandarin phonetics and usage, then proceed to increase in fluency in directed conversation sessions using modern Chinese texts as major subjects of discussion. 150.366 Advanced Mandarin Comprehension: A further level of training intended for the heritage students. There will be further training in oral/aural proficiency while in the same time emphasis will be placed on written expression. Basic English-Chinese Chinese- English translation skills will also be introduced. 150.263 Chinese Civilization: An interdisciplinary study of Chinese civilization from earliest times to the Opium War. All aspects of Chinese culture will be examined, including geography, religion, philosophy, history, sociology, economics and politics. A central unified theme will be the examination of Chinese cultural identity. The instructional language is English. 150.266 Modern Chinese Literature in Translation: A study of modern Chinese literature including prose, poetry and drama by selected writers from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and overseas Chinese communities. The instructional language is English. 150.257 History, Society, Culture and Chinese Film: This course will focus on the presentation of various aspects of Chinese culture through the medium of film. Films will be selected largely from those recently produced in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, with some attention to recent North American movies by ethnic Chinese directors. The instructional language is English. 150.258 Women and Chinese Film: The course will focus on the cinematic representation of women in Chinese films. Films will be selected largely from those recently produced in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as recent North American movies by ethnic Chinese directors. The intention is to review how image of women reflected the Chinese cinema has changed with time, place and modern technology. The instructional language is English.
